Small increases in the average DMB value have been shown to correlate with substantial increases in experimentally derived bone fracture strength [1]. However, the role of mineral heterogeneity remains ambiguous as both increases and decreases in heterogeneity have been associated with reduced fracture strength [1]. One potential reason may be attributed to a lack of understanding related to the customary mineral heterogeneity of typical cortical and trabecular bone tissue. Although the peripheral radius site has received increased attention with the introduction of micro-level imaging technology for clinical use, the DMB has not been well studied for the distal radius. The purpose of this study is to quantify the DMB distributions of the distal radius and identify trends related to proximal/distal location and trabecular/cortical bone sub-regions.

Background: The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum vitamin D and the status of bone mineral density in patients with low-energy hip and distal radius fracture. Methods: This retrospective case-control study was performed between January 2013 and January 2014. Participants aged 55 years or older were divided to case group including 85 patients with lo...

Comparison of close reduction and percutaneous pin fixation as treatments for distal metaphyseal radius fractures

Background: Distal radius fractures are one of the most common fractures of skeletal system and because of the aging of population, its incidence is rising. The aim of the present research was to evaluate the close reduction and percutaneous pin fixation as a treatment option. Material and methods: 44 patients who were type 2 according to universal classification or type 2 or 3 according to Ol...

Short-term Results of Using Injectable Bone Cement Technique in the Treatment of Unstable Distal Radius Fractures

Background & Aims: Treatment of osteoporotic distal radius fracture with metaphyseal defect is often complicated by secondary displacement, because of posterior cortex comminution. The aim of this study was to investigate functional outcomes and advantages of injection of bone cement in stabilizing and maintaining this fracture reduction. Methods: This prospective study was performed on 20 ...

Osteoarticular allograft reconstruction of the distal radius after giant cell tumor resection

Abstract  Background: Resection of the distal end of the radius is indicated in the treatment  of locally aggressive primary benign and malignant bone tumors. The aim of this study  was to evaluate the technique of osteoarticular allograft reconstruction of the distal radius after wide excision of a giant-cell tumor.  Methods: We analyzed 15 patients retrospectively who had reconstruction of t...

Evaluation of one third of distal radius bone density in patients with primary osteoporosis

Background: Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disease of the bone in the world, and has hit about 200 million people around the world and it increases the risk of fractures. More than 5 million osteoporotic fractures occur annually in the world. Bone mineral density is the standard method of diagnosis of this disease. In this method, proximal of femur (neck) and lumbar vertebra bones (L...
